Thanet Way crash as car hits Pilgrims Lane Kennels and Cattery site in Whitstable

A kennel owner got a fright this morning when a car left the Thanet Way and smashed through his business’s fence.

Colin Spooner, who was elected as a Seasalter councillor this year, has owned the Pilgrims Lane Kennels and Cattery site just off the main road for 10 years.

He was out walking his dogs just before 8.30am today when the car – a grey VW Polo – left the road at Yorkletts and careered into his fence.

Cllr Spooner (Con) said: “I was out walking my dogs, heard a kerfuffle and the car appeared.

“It’s made a right mess of it all.

“It was a bit of a shock. I dealt with the accident until the police and ambulance arrived.”

Cllr Spooner called the emergency services just before 8.30am and is now working on getting a temporary fence erected.

He usually lets his dogs off the lead around the site to exercise them but will now have to keep them under close control.

The car, which left the road in wet conditions, ploughed through a sign and demolished the fence.

Cllr Spooner added: “If my sign hadn’t been there it would have been in my garden by now.

“I had a sign that was advertising the kennels that was concreted in my garden three-feet down.

“If that hadn’t been there, he would have ended up in the middle of my garden.

“It was awful.”

Police attended the scene and traffic was unaffected as the car was away from a live lane in Pilgrims Lane.

The driver of the car and the 18-year-old passenger on-board were both walking at the scene with no obvious injuries.

But an ambulance service spokesman confirmed the driver was taken by crews to the QEQM hospital in Margate for further checks.

The 18-year-old female passenger was discharged at the scene.
