Did you know that contrary to popular belief, choosing timber when seeking out building materials is actually one of the best environmentally-friendly options?

With temperatures continuing to climb across the globe and more erratic weather patterns being observed throughout many parts of the world, more and more people are turning to eco-friendly lifestyles.

Recycling is already embedded into the lives of most people across the UK while green travel options like hybrid vehicles are also increasing in popularity.

Getting the right kind of source material in construction is also an important cog in the wheel of green living.

According to Wood for Good - the timber industry’s campaign to promote the use of wood in design and construction - if all house-building targets in the UK were met with timber frame construction, the country could become a carbon bank and store 3.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

“Properly-managed wood, like the timber we sell, is actually a fantastic option when it comes to caring about the environment,” said James Hutchings, who is Managing Director of Hutchings Timber in Deal.

“Timber is always recommended for eco-builds whether it’s garden homes or fences and I can see how that can sound like a paradox but there is a big difference.

“Using timber that has been illegally cut down and logged has nothing to do with the well-managed forests, like the ones in Scandinavia, where we obtain our timber.”

Log cabins and garden homes built from wood have become increasingly popular across the UK.

This runs counter to many other forms of manufacture which can be long and arduous and often result in high emissions and harmful chemicals.

“Apart from being eco-friendly, using UK-grown timber like the ones at Hutchings Timber contributes to the local culture and economy,” continued James.

“Timber distinguishes itself from traditional rivals, brick and concrete, it uses far less energy to manufacture and is actually cheaper than most other materials.”

Forests and woodlands play a pivotal role for the environment, both in terms of reducing carbon dioxide in the air and ensuring that there is a natural habitat animals, flora and fauna to survive.

Failure to properly sustain a profitable woodland management could actually result in woodlands being lost from the countryside.

Last month, over a million students skipped a day off school to protest what they describe as government inaction on climate change.

Organisers said there were more than 2,000 protests in 125 countries and this further highlights the concerns of global warming.

Some scientists say changes are already evident in many parts of the world - with the biggest impact in Canada - and that these changes are projected to intensify.

“We are a well-established family business and have been trading timber to businesses and DIY enthusiasts,” added James.
