In partnership with What’s On, Geoff Rambler is leading a series of walks around Kent, and this month’s passes Wickhambreaux Manor, which was home to two renowned women in history.

The mansion, which dominates the picturesque village of Wickhambreaux near Canterbury, was the family home of Henry II’s mistress Rosamund Clifford, known as ‘the Fair Rosamund’, during the 12th century.

In the 14th century it was home to Joan of Kent, known as ‘the Fair Maid of Kent’, who was wife of the Black Prince, mother of Richard II and the first Princess of Wales.

After strolling across farmland from Stodmarsh nature reserve to Wickhambreaux, the walk will then follow the crystal-clear water of the Little Stour to Grove, before returning along the Great Stour as it passes through the nature reserve.

The Great Stour is the water-route from the Wantsum Channel to Canterbury and probably provided the means by which St Augustine, who brought Christianity to our shores, made his way to Canterbury. Participants are advised to take binoculars as the group will stop at a hide along the way.

The gentle seven-and-a-half mile walk starts at the Stodmarsh nature reserve car park in Stodmarsh, near Canterbury, at 10am on Saturday, September 28.

It is free but there will be a collection for the Kent Air Ambulance at the end.

Geoff Rambler, aka Geoff Etridge, has put together his What's On walks in a new book to raise funds for charity.

Rambles and Ramblings is a diary of 11 circular walks in Kent including Blue Bell Hill and St Mary Hoo, with a potted history along the way.

Many of them were rambles he organised during the past year in partnership with What's On.

A minimum donation of £5 per copy is requested.

The book was printed with a donation from the HRP Boorman Family Foundation, so all proceeds go to support the work of the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance.
