Warning after series of violent handbag robberies

THREE handbag robberies this week have prompted police to warn women to be careful when walking alone.

All three incidents took place in Tunbridge Wells - the first just before midnight on Sunday in Molyneux Park Road when a woman was knocked to the ground and had her bag taken.

The second happened in the Belgrave Road area on Tuesday, again shortly before midnight.

As a woman was unlocking the door to her home she was kicked from behind and had her bag taken. The woman was not badly hurt but did go to Kent and Sussex Hospital for checks after the incident.

Then between 1am and 1.30am on Wednesday a woman in her 20s was walking home along the High Street in the direction of the Pantiles.

She had just entered Chapel Place when she was pushed to the ground from behind and had her bag taken. She was not badly hurt but suffered cuts to her chin.

Sgt Michael Perryman, of West Kent police, said: "At the moment these robberies have not been linked but it is unusual for this type of crime to happen in the town.

"We do not have a clear description of any of the offenders as yet but our inquiries include viewing closed circuit television footage. It would also help if anyone who has any information contacts us.

"If people are sensible about where they walk and how they carry their bags they should not be worried.

"Whatever the time of day we would encourage people to walk in well-lit areas and carry a handbag across the body. If you have any concerns about suspicious people please ring the police."

Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to contact West Kent Police on 01732 370732 (if possible quoting reference 8341) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their name.
