Police said paramedics attended the scene at 11.27am and three people were treated for minor injuries.

The road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident but has since been reopened.

Eye witness Claire Waller, who owns nearby shop Jeremy’s Home Store, said she believed the driver could have been attempting to turn around to avoid traffic restrictions on Monson Road.

“She went into reverse and went straight into Blacks,” she said. “I can only think she was doing a three point turn. I was standing on the colonnade above the shop and saw it happen.

“It was very high speed – I’ve never seen anyting like it except in films. She narrowly missed a man standing at a rail of clothes, and the car ended up at the back of the shop. It was quite a shock.”

Claire said she ran down to ask her staff to call an ambulance, before heading over to the scene.

“I have to say it’s been an accident waiting to happen,” she added. “People are always doing three point turns to avoid going down Monson Road towards the war memorial because you will get a fine.

“We’ve said it for quite a few years.”

Nadine Kayyali works at Headmasters hairdressers opposite and said her colleagues witnessed the crash.

She told KentOnline: "Two girls at the front said the car was parked just outside and then it just shot backwards straight into Blacks.

"It was a loud bang. A couple of girls ran over to see if everyone was okay, and one stayed behind to call an ambulance.

"We went over there and an elderly woman got out of the car. She was sat on a chair in there. An ambulance took her and someone else away.

“It was a bit of a shock. I just hope everyone's ok."
