Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells survives first cash hurdle but appeal for donations continues

A "remarkable" response to a plea to help save a cash-strapped theatre from closure has raised thousands of pounds – but more is still needed.

In January, the management of the Trinity Theatre in Church Road, Tunbridge Wells, launched an urgent appeal to its patrons for donations to keep the venue afloat.

The executive director Nick Mowat said the building needed to raise £25,000 urgently by the end of January and a total of £100,000 by the end of March so it could start the new financial year free from debt.

Supporters rallied round and the January target was met.

A total of £48,307 has now been raised, thanks to more than 600 donations.

Mr Mowat said: "The response of our members, volunteers and patrons has been remarkable.

"We surpassed our initial target of £25,000 by the end of January and are well on our way to our second target of a further £75,000 by the end of this month.

"With a 200-year-old building, there are always demands on our finances and we are planning to keep our Just Giving campaign open for further donations.

He told patrons: "Thank you for taking the time to consider Trinity and how you can help. For all of you who have been able to donate, we are truly grateful for your kindness and belief that Trinity must survive and continue to provide Tunbridge Wells with a fantastic cultural offer."

The Trinity is continuing to plan for a full range of offerings in 2023, including a re-energised cinema programme.

The theatre has been operating in the refashioned former Trinity Church since 1982.

But it has faced three tough years as it has dealt with the Covid pandemic, enforced closures, inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.

It does not receive any support from Arts Council nor Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.

Many of its staff are unpaid volunteers.
