A21 Pembury: Bomb squad and Kent Police called to reports of unexploded bomb discovery

Bomb disposal experts from the Ministry of Defence have carried out a controlled explosion of what was believed to be a Second World War bomb.

The device, found yesterday in woodland close to the A21 in Pembury, was destroyed at about 5pm this afternoon.

A muffled bang was heard for a considerable distance and a brief road closure on the A21 came into force while the munition was disposed of.

Prior to the detonation, a police helicopter swept the area with a search light to ensure no one was near the device.

The force received a report yesterday afternoon that a Second World War bomb had been discovered.

The location where the bomb was found is far away from the road and homes with no public access to it.
