Jake Embery is backing his fellow Tonbridge strikers to come good.

New signing Embery scored on his first start as Angels lost 2-1 at Slough last Saturday.

It was just the second time Tonbridge have found the net in their last seven league games, leaving them 18th in National South.

Embery, 22, understands the life of a forward and knows Ibrahim Olutade, Tommy Wood and Aaron Smith-Joseph have goals in them to fire Tonbridge up the table.

“The team have been playing really well, I’m a bit surprised to see where they are in the league,” he said.

“I’ve been impressed with the quality in training, I just think it’s one of those when confidence is low and things aren’t going your way, you get a bit snatchy and don’t take chances you should take.

“You hit dry patches and because you’re not relaxed, chances you’d instinctively finish, you start to miss.

“In 90 minutes you’re bound to make a mistake as a team and it just seems they’re being punished.”

Former Maidstone striker Embery started this season at Margate, scoring a hat-trick in their FA Cup replay win at Thame United.

But the move didn’t work out as he’d hoped and he’s welcomed the chance to test himself back at National South level.

Play him in a two up front and Embery has the best chance of delivering.

He said: “Steve (McKimm, Angels boss) said his main formation is 3-5-2 but there are times he matches teams up.

“It’s not that I can’t play in a one but to get the best out of me, I’m always better in a two.

“I haven’t really had a conversation with Steve about how much I’m going to play, it’s more that I just want to be involved.

“I wasn’t expecting to start at Slough, I don’t expect to start any game, I just want to enjoy my football, which I have been.

“Part of the reason why I wanted to come to Tonbridge was to get back to the league where I feel I should be playing.

“I made an error dropping down, in hindsight.

“I want to play as high as possible and I’m back where I believe I should be.”
