Traffic chaos after crashes involving 14 cars

A MAJOR road was closed for more than two hours today after 14 cars were involved in a series of pile-ups.

Police were called just after 6am to an incident on the slip road to the A21 north-bound at Quarry Hill, Tonbridge, involving nine cars. No one suffered serious injuries and no one was taken to hospital.

A second incident happened shortly afterwards in the tailbacks on the A21 caused by the first incident. This involved three cars and one man was taken to Kent and Sussex Hospital with minor injuries.

In the tailbacks resulting from this collision, a third incident happened involving two cars. There were no injuries.

The road was closed so that cars could be recovered and it re-opened at about 8.45am.

Insp Robert Ratcliffe said: "There has been considerable disruption as a result of these incidents.

"As we begin to experience winter conditions, I would urge motorists to adapt their driving to the road conditions.

"If there is rain, the roads will be slippery, and visibility, poor. Drivers should keep their distance from other vehicles and allow sufficient time for their journey."
