Thanet records no new coronavirus cases in past 10 days

Not a single new Covid-19 case has been recorded in Thanet for 10 days, figures reveal.

Latest Public Health England statistics show the last positive test registered in the district was on August 14.

At the same time, the number of new cases in the last 28 days is 68% lower than in the four weeks before, falling from 71 to 23.

The figures were released as it was revealed the number of people from Kent dying of Covid-19 each week has fallen into single figures for the first time since lockdown.

Seven deaths were recorded among the county’s residents across all settings in the first week of August - accounting for 3% of the total from all causes over the same period.

At the height of the pandemic, 242 people from Kent died in a single week - 28% of all deaths.

There have also been no new coronavirus cases recorded across the county in the past two days.

North Thanet MP Sir Roger Gale has welcomed recent improvements, but warns against complacency.

“My concern is that we start taking chances and lower our guard because the last thing anyone wants is an awful spike,” he said.

“While this is good news, if we continue to be responsible and sensible, we may be able to keep a lid on it. If we are not, we could face the flare up again.

“We’ve seen the effects of clustering nationally and locally and there have been incidents abroad where suddenly there’s been an outbreak because a group of people have got together - and we have to be on guard against that. I don’t want to be a killjoy, because I’m as aware as anybody of the effect on business this has had. I think the balance of the lockdown rules is about right.

“We can’t just take all the brakes off because it’s still necessary to socially distance in pubs, public transport and in theatres. If we don’t do that, the danger is we’ll throw away all the gains we’ve made.”

Across the Thanet district, 24 residents have lost their lives with the virus in the last nine weeks - the same number as in a single week at the end of April when the pandemic was at its height.

Cases have also fallen dramatically. In April there were 181 positive tests recorded across the district in seven days.

So far in August there have been 14 new cases.

The trend is replicated across Kent as a whole, with the county’s rate of new cases three times lower than England’s.

On Sunday, figures showed there had been 3.7 positive tests per 100,000 people in the seven days previous - compared to a national rate of 11.

But Kent’s director of public health, Andrew Scott-Clark, says now is not the time to relax.

He said: “We are pleased that the weekly figures are declining for both the number of confirmed cases and deaths.

“This is something we continue to monitor extremely carefully and are ready to take action in the event of significant outbreaks.

“However, now is not the time to relax or be complacent as Covid-19 is still out there and the battle is far from over if we wish to avoid a second wave and the potential for local containment measures.”

Other districts across Kent recorded the following new cases over that same 10-day period up to today:

  • Folkestone and Hythe - 16
  • Maidstone - 10
  • Medway - 9
  • Tonbridge and Malling - 9
  • Gravesham - 8
  • Canterbury - 7
  • Sevenoaks - 6
  • Dover - 6
  • Dartford - 5
  • Swale - 4
  • Tunbridge Wells - 2
  • Ashford - 2
