Five callouts in seven hours, including for a locked-out pregnant woman, for busy Margate Fire Station nightshift

Firefighters had a busy night with five callouts in seven hours last night.

The Margate station crew members were called out to a road accident, a locked-out pregnant woman and rubbish fires.

The first shout was to the Minnis Bay promenade in Birchington, at 10.30pm (Saturday) for a rubbish fire.

This was put out swiftly and only caused minor damage to a beach hut.

At 12.24am (Sunday) they were asked to help paramedics in Margate in a medical case where a patient had to be taken to hospital.

At 2.20am they were sent to a road accident involving one vehicle outside the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate.

The driver and three passengers affected had already got out of the vehicle and the firefighters were able to leave police and ambulance staff to deal with the incident.

Meanwhile an eight-months pregnant woman ended up locked out of her flat at Cliftonville.

Crew manager Paul Cook said: “She had accidentally locked herself out. We were called at 2.45am and managed to reopen her front door for her.”

The second rubbish fire was at 5am at the Royal Esplanade in Margate.

The cause was not confirmed but a discarded cigarette was not ruled out.
