A million pound drive to push people into work and improve skill levels has been launched in Thanet.

The new Thanet Works programme is funded by the government as part of its Working Neighbourhoods Fund and will be used to support innovative ideas designed to break down employment barriers.

The funding is aimed at school under-achievers and leavers, as well as benefit claimants and those in employment with no qualifications or a poor skillset.

John Healey , the local government minister, said: “Giving people the support to get back into work can transform their life and can help transform their whole neighbourhood.

“We’re determined to break the cycle of deprivation that blights too many people.”

Cllr Jo Gideon, chairman of the Thanet Works board, added: “We’re looking forward to some new and exciting ideas from organisations in the public, private, voluntary and community sector.”

Meanwhile, a number of 51-week apprenticeships have been launched by Thanet council at the start of the programme.

The authority will employ a financial administrator and two customer service assistants who will study for an NVQ at the same time.

Applicants will need to demonstrate a level of basic skills, such as computing and communications, and an ability to work in a team environment.

More information about the apprenticeships and Thanet Works, a joint initiative between local authorities, Thanet and East Kent Chamber of Commerce and the Learning and Skills Council, is available at www.thanet.gov.uk/thanetworks
