Wetherspoon pub Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate shut due to sickness outbreak

One of the UK's largest pubs has been closed following an outbreak of sickness among staff.

Wetherspoon has confirmed the Royal Victoria Pavilion in Ramsgate "voluntarily" shut yesterday due to the breakout.

A deep clean of the pub is currently being undertaken and it has not been confirmed when it will reopen.

Thanet District Council has also been informed.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "We can confirm that The Royal Victoria Pavilion is currently closed after an outbreak of sickness amongst some staff.

"Thanet District Council's environmental health officer has been informed.

"Wetherspoon has voluntarily closed the pub.

"A full deep clean of the pub is being undertaken.

"The pub will remain closed at present."

Mr Gershon could not confirm what the sickness is or when the pub is likely to reopen.

The Royal Victoria Pavilion was launched in 2017 after Wetherspoon transformed the Grade II-listed building after it was derelict for almost 10 years.

The former casino closed in 2008 and the building then suffered fire damage in 2011.
