It was a crash course with a difference as diploma students from across Thanet took part in a Critical Incident Day at Westwood Cross.

The youngsters talked to police officers, firefighters and paramedics about careers in the emergency services, and watched as they simulated a serious road traffic collision.

They also met magistrates, solicitors and social services who explained the role they play in the aftermath of a crash.

Richard Harker, a paramedic with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “We’re hoping that these kids will be the future of the emergency services because it’s a great career to get into.

“Hopefully they’re more aware of the dangers of drink driving, taking drugs and driving and going out with joy riders or drivers who don’t have licenses.”
