Driver 'lucky to survive' head-on smash

A car DRIVER suffered serious leg injuries after his car was involved in a head-on collision on dual carriageway.

Firefighters spent an hour cutting the man from the wreckage of his Peugeot last night on the A28 between the St Nicholas roundabout and Brooksend Hill near Birchington.

The man is understood to be in his 30s. A motorist in the other car, a Mercedes, was unhurt.

The accident happened on the coastbound carriageway, halfway along the section of road. The London-bound road had been closed for re-surfacing and traffic diverted. The Mercedes had been travelling towards Thanet.

A consultant surgeon from the Accident and Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital spent 15 minutes stabilising the injured man before firefighters could start their rescue.

Crews from Ramsgate, Margate and Westgate used hydraulic gear to free him.

Paul Newman, the Ramsgate fire station manager attended. He said: "The driver suffered extremely serious leg injuries and is very lucky to be alive."
