He has been released on police bail until May 20 while enquiries are ongoing.

Police are now reminding moped owners to store their vehicles securely.

Inspector Lara Connor of Thanet community safety unit said: "We have received reports of mopeds being stolen, some of which are found later, but we have also recovered mopeds suspected to be stolen however the thefts haven’t been reported to police at the time.

"Vehicle theft is not acceptable, regardless of the type of vehicle, and our officers are carrying out patrols to deter further thefts.

"During the bank holiday weekend we stopped and checked a number of mopeds in Margate and Ramsgate to ensure all were being lawfully used by the rightful owners.

"Although most were legitimate, one vehicle was seized for having no insurance.

"While we continue our work to target vehicle thieves, we ask that moped owners review how they secure their vehicles.

"Use a lock to secure the front brake disc, and use a chain through the back wheel to attach it to something secure.

"Cover the vehicle up, store it in a garage or keep it out of sight – don’t leave your bike on display for passing potential thieves.

"We are asking residents to remain vigilant to anything suspicious and report it to us on 101 or 999 if you believe a crime is in progress.’
