Crackdown on drink sales to youngsters

Police and trading standards officers have carried out a joint operation at off-licences in Thanet.

Test purchases were carried out at five businesses to see if alcohol was being sold to underage customers.

One off-licence will now be the subject of enforcement and licensing review.

Insp Simon Morris said: “These regular operations demonstrate our determination to crack down on underage alcohol purchase and consumption, sending out a clear message to retailers that we will not tolerate the sale of alcohol to minors.”

The action came as the Government discussed advising parents on what age children should be allowed to drink alcohol.
