THEY scored 2,684 runs, took 93 wickets and bowled 545 overs.

These are some of the stats from a record-breaking Kent cricket match now officially declared the world’s longest by the Guinness Book of Records.

The game between property agents Oakwood Homes, which has three offices in Thanet, and Chestfield cricket club lasted an incredible 35 hours – one hour longer than the previous holder, a club in Northumberland.

Although the match was played last September, it is only now that the record has been confirmed and a certificate dispatched to Oakwood Homes.

The other winners are Pilgrims Hospices, which are now £10,000 better off thanks to the sponsorship raised. The charity was chosen because an employee’s relative and a cricket club member had both been cared for at Pilgrims Hospices before their deaths in 2006.

Oakwood associate director Paul Jordan said: “We’re delighted to be named the world record-holders.

“There were some very strict criteria to meet to ensure the game was continuous.

“All 22 players had to play the whole game and breaks could only be taken for short periods.

“It was tough going and we were all tired by the end.”

The game started at 8am on a Saturday and continued through the night under floodlights, using white balls, until 7pm on the Sunday evening.

Mr Jordan added: “The number of overs played is similar to the total in a full five-day game, so we did very well to pack so much in during the time.”

The Oakwood Homes team included managing director Andrew Dickinson and his

15-year-old son Michael, and Mr Jordan’s son Ashley, also 15.
