Armed police officers respond to major incident in Camden Road, Ramsgate

by Peter Barnett and Martin Jefferies

Armed police officers have sealed off part of a Kent town centre following reports of a burglary earlier today.

Firearms teams, dog units and the police helicopter were alerted to an incident in Camden Road, Ramsgate, at 9.40am.

It is unclear whether anyone has been injured or if shots were fired.

A young woman who was visiting a friend in nearby Camden Square saw armed police in the area. She said: "It was pretty scary. They were dressed all in black and carrying big guns.

"There were quite a lot of police in and around the area and when I left, more police cars were heading there."

She was among motorists whose cars were stopped and searched.

She said: "I was trying to go home but as I passed the Camden Arms pub an officer stopped me and asked me to open my car boot. Police had a look inside and I was allowed to leave."

Camden Square is off Ramsgate town centre between La Belle Alliance Square and The Plains of Waterloo.

Parts of the area were taped off as the police operation unfolded.

A spokesman for Kent Police said one arrest had been made but did not give any further details. Investigations are continuing this afternoon.
