A private ambulance overturned in a crash this morning, injuring two workers and a patient who was being taken to hospital.

The crash happened on the A299 Hengist Way, Ramsgate, between McDonald's and Cliffsend, just after 1.30am. The incident had been described as serious.

The road has been closed for much of the morning, which police say was to ensure public safety, between Tothill Street and Canterbury Road West.

A force spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance were also in attendance.

Firefighters used heavy rescue cutting gear to gain access to the back of the vehicle and release the three people, before making the scene safe.

"Three men, two ambulance staff and a patient, sustained injuries and all were taken to a local hospital for treatment."

The private vehicle was working on behalf of Kent's ambulance trust, SECAMB.

A spokesman said: "A patient was being transported at the time to the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother Hospital, in Margate, and suffered a leg injury as a result of the incident.

"The two crew suffered head injuries and all were taken to the William Harvey Hospital. No other vehicle was involved in the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the patient and staff involved in this incident. We are working with the private provider and the police to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident.
