The spotlight will shine on a range of achievements at this year’s Thanet Sports Awards.

It takes place on Friday at Margate’s Winter Gardens.

The awards celebrate Thanet sporting talent and achievement across all ages, abilities and a full range of sports and is organised by Thanet District Council’s Sports Matters team, in partnership with Thanet Sports Network.

Paralympic Team GB star Martine Wright will speak at this year’s Thanet Sports Awards.

Martine was the worst injured, and last rescued survivor, of the 7/7 bombings and she will share her moving story at the gathering.

She was trapped for more than an hour having lost 80% of her blood supply as well as both legs above the knees.

She was in a coma for 10 days and had to undergo 10 months of rehabilitation.

After a painful year of rehabilitation, she learned to walk again on prosthetics.

Part of Martine’s rehabilitation involved playing wheelchair tennis before moving on to sitting volleyball and she was vice captain of Team GB in the sport at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

Cllr Iris Johnston, cabinet member for TDC’s community services, said: “It is an honour to have Martine attend this year’s ceremony to share her inspirational story.

“In the face of adversity Martine has shown extraordinary courage and dedication to achieve her dreams and we look forward to welcoming her.

“The Sports Awards is a great opportunity to recognise and reward the continuous work our clubs, coaches, volunteers and athletes do in the promotion and delivery of sport.”

The awards ceremony, now in its fifth year, will be compered by popular broadcaster and DJ Johnny Lewis.

The evening gives clubs, coaches and volunteers the chance to showcase the support and dedication they provide, and their achievements locally.

The Legacy Village promotions stands will offer information on local clubs and organisations.
