Six seriously injured in horror smash

SIX people were taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries after a car accident late on Sunday night.

A woman had to be cut free from a car by Kent Fire and Rescue Service after the collision between a white BMW Coupe and a silver Peugeot 205 in Eurolink Way, Sittingbourne.

Four fire engines attended and used cutting equipment to free the woman. Five ambulances also attended to carry the injured to hospital. All nine people involved were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital, six of them suffering injuries described as serious.

A 13-year-old boy suffered serious multiple injuries, a 12-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries, a 10-year-old boy suffered minor cuts and bruises and a 3-year-old boy suffered a suspected minor head injury according to police. All are from Sittingbourne and were travelling in the back of the Peugeot.

The driver, a 34-year-old Sittingbourne woman who was cut free from the wreckage, and her front seat passenger, a man, both suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the BMW, a 24-year-old Sittingbourne man, suffered a suspected minor injury to his neck. But his front seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman, and rear seat passenger, a 16-year-old boy, both also from Sittingbourne, suffered serious head injuries.

Leading firefighter Stuart Beadle, from Sittingbourne Fire Station, said: “It seems as if one of the cars lost control, spun and hit the car coming in the other direction.

“It took us about half an hour to cut the woman driver free after which we assisted ambulance crews in giving emergency first aid while waiting for the other to turn up to take the injured people to hospital.”

Sittingbourne has only one ambulance, so the other four had to travel from other Kent towns to attend the accident scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and give details. Please contact Sittingbourne Police on 01795 584175 between 8am and 8pm.
