Police renew appeal for witnesses to fatal A249 crash

Police have renewed their appeal after a woman in her 60s died in a two-car crash on the A249 near Stockbury.

Officers now want to speak to a lorry driver who they believe could have vital information about the collision.

It happened shortly after 6.30am last Tuesday on the Maidstone-bound carriageway, at the junction with Oad Street.

A red Vauxhall Insignia and a white Ford Fiesta were involved in the crash and the driver of the Fiesta, 61-year-old Sylvia Martin, died at the scene.

Sergeant Glyn Walker, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are trying to trace the driver of a lorry which passed the scene on the opposite carriageway of the A249 a matter of seconds before the collision.

"Being a commercial vehicle, the driver had an elevated position, and the vehicle may have been fitted with a dash cam or similar.

"The driver would likely not be aware that a collision subsequently occurred, but may have information that would be useful to our investigation. They are sought solely as a potential witness."

The lorry was a single axle heavy goods vehicle with a white cab and a blue tarpaulin trailer. There was a yellow logo on the bottom of the driver's door.

Sergeant Walker added: "We are hoping lorry drivers can cast their mind back to Tuesday, April 24 and if they were driving an HGV matching that description along the A249 towards Sittingbourne at about 6.30am that they will get in touch."

Anyone with information is urged to call the witness appeal line on 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk quoting reference number JG/060/18.
