The road reopened at around 3.35pm but it has been causing delays from Junction 5 of the M2 at Stockbury roundabout to the A2 and in and around Newington.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a three-vehicle collision on the A249 at 1.38pm.

"The collision happened near to the turn-off for Sittingbourne. South East Coast Ambulance Service was also called.

"No serious injuries were reported but one car did need to be recovered."

The road is now clear.

It was the second crash to close the A249 today.

There were long queues earlier after a car and a caravan overturned on the Sheppey-bound carriageway between the Kent Showground entrance and Stockbury roundabout.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called at 11.45am and one person was treated for a head injury.
