Pool and sports hall at The Swallows leisure centre in Sittingbourne still closed after storm damage

The closure of the main parts of a leisure centre are likely to continue into next month.

The Swallows, in Central Avenue Sittingbourne, was shut on Sunday, February 9 when its roof was damaged in a storm.

It meant the whole complex and its car park had to stay closed until sections of it including the soft play and indoor climbing area, and the weights gym area reopened on Tuesday last week.

But, a week on, the complex's swimming pool and sports hall remain closed as did one of its studios.

Yesterday Dave Harcourt, CEO of Swale Community Leisure, which runs the centre, said: "We are all aware that The Swallows leisure centre suffered damage to the fabric of the roof during the recent storms, Ciara and Dennis.

"The ongoing high winds and heavy rainfall have hampered work, but the damaged parts of the roof have been secured and made safe.

"As we announced on Friday, the building has been reopened, with the exception of the swimming pool, sports hall and Studio One, which remain closed at present."

He added: "We are working closely with a specialist roofing contractor and structural surveyor in order to further assess the damage and commence remedial work.

"This is an intensive process and will take several days to complete.

"Once we have this information, we will of course let people know what the next steps might be."

While the pool closure is in place, members are being advised to use Sheerness Swimming Pool.

When asked if members would be getting refunds if they were not able to use the facilities at The Swallows, Mr Harcourt said customers would be "advised directly in due course".

Some of the gym classes held in the studio that is still closed are being moved.
