Charity campaigner Bernard Bibby verbally assaulted in Bell Road, Sittingbourne, whilst dressed as Miss Orchid

Officers are investigating reports cancer charity ambassador Bernard Bibby was verbally abused while dressed as a woman in Sittingbourne.

He dresses up as his counterpart Miss Orchid to raise awareness of male cancer.

The 72-year-old was walking near the Swale council offices in Bell Road last month when a group of men shouted at him.

Mr Bibby said: “I was just walking back to my car and for a totally unprovoked reason, a man started shouting and swearing at me, and using some foul language which I didn’t think was quite appropriate.

The Canterbury Road, Sittingbourne, resident added: “I was just doing a bit of charity fundraising.

“As a man, I just ignored it, but I cast my mind to being a woman and it would be very very unnerving.

“I have talked to a number of ladies and the stories they have told me makes moving around this town very worrying- they said they won’t go out at night in Sittingbourne, they’re scared.”

He thinks the solution is simple: “We need good old-fashioned policing- we need beat bobbies, and a police presence on these streets.”

Police have not yet made any arrests and enquiries are ongoing.
