An image posted by Network Rail shortly before 4pm shows the collapse of a mass of a cliff in Newington, Sittingbourne next to the track.

Southeastern has confirmed there may also be disruption for those wishing to travel from Sittingbourne to Rainham.

The operator says an inspection is being carried out to investigate the landslide.

A statement by Network Rail read: "We're sorry to passengers delayed by a landslip at Newington.

"As you can see the earth on this embankment has slipped away and for safety reasons we've had to close the line towards Faversham.

"We've also had to impose a 40mph speed limit on trains travelling in the other direction.

"Our geo-technical experts need to inspect the embankment before we can make a decision about repairs or reopening the line."
