Drivers are reporting that a "huge hole" has reopened on the M2 between Sittingbourne and Faversham.

The M2 was closed last night so emergency repairs could be carried out after the hole appeared on the coastbound side of the carriageway between Junction 5 and Junction 6.

Now Highways England have said that there are long delays tonight due to a "carriageway defect" which has closed one lane.

One driver reported the overhead matrix signs were warning of two hours of delays.

Last night up to 30 vehicles are said to have been badly damaged as a result of the hole, leaving those driving them stranded.

Highways England described the issue as "severe" and repair work got underway at around 8.50pm yesterday.

The M2 remained closed until around 11pm.

Motorists earlier reported the damage to the carriageway was caused by an accident involving a van and trailer that nearly jack-knifed.

The situation echoes that facing motorists using the nearby A249 last January when a huge sinkhole opened up near Sittingbourne, causing part of the Sheppey-bound carriageway to be closed for weeks.
