Fire crews called to family car on M2 between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone and Junction 6 for Faversham

A family had to pull over on the side of a motorway after spotting white smoke coming from their engine.

Firefighters were called to the coast-bound M2 between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone, and Junction 6 for Faversham, at about 8.45pm yesterday.

A crew from Sittingbourne and another from Faversham went to put out the fire, caused by an engine fault.

The two adults and two children who were travelling in the Ford Focus were already out when they arrived.

They used a hose and breathing apparatus to put the smoke out before Highways England took control of the situation.

The fire crews were there for about 40 minutes and one lane of the motorway was closed. No injuries were reported.

Earlier, the crews were sent to a garden shed and hedges alight.

It happened at about 5pm in Broadoak Road, near Highsted.

Two fire engines, again one from Sittingbourne and one from Faversham, spent about an hour putting out the blaze and damping it down.

The shed, which had gardening equipment and a lawnmower in it, was completely destroyed. The cause is unknown.
