A man accused of causing the death of a teenage Medway student, has been remanded in custody and will face trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

Mateusz Makiewicz, of Canterbury Road, Sittingbourne, was arrested two days after an accident on the A2 at Moor Street, in Rainham, which killed 19-year-old April George.

April, who studied criminal justice at the University of Kent’s Chatham Maritime campus, was travelling with her dad Steven in a Peugeot 206 when they were involved in a collision with a Citroen Picassso, on December 7.

Makiewicz, 29, a Polish national, was charged with causing death by careless driving, but has not entered a plea.

He appeared before magistrates in Medway on Friday, January 20, where the case was adjourned until his next appearance at crown court on Friday, February 3.

Former Fulston Manor pupil April, who had a part-time job as a receptionist at
Sheerness Dental Centre, was given emergency treatment at the scene, but died in hospital later.
