It came off the road and hit the wire barrier between the carriageways at about 4.55am.

Firefighters, police and medics were sent.

Sittingbourne crew manager, Mat Barney, from Sittingbourne Fire Station, was one of those who attended.

He said: "The car smashed into the wire central reservation and it travelled about 100 metres before it stopped, facing in the wrong direction.

"The car was absolutely shredded."

Paramedics were also called but the driver, a man, did not need to be taken to hospital.

There were queues this morning and again this afternoon after the route was reduced to one lane by the damaged section of wire.

Highways England is responsible for that section of the A249 and has been contacted for more information.
