A double decker bus had its roof ripped off this morning after its driver went under a railway bridge in Milton Road, Sittingbourne.

The road was closed to traffic and the bridge to trains.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 9am to reports of a collision between a bus and a bridge.

"It is understood there were no passengers on board, however, part of the road has been closed to allow vehicle recovery and to assess the condition of the bridge."

Zoe Drury, who works at nearby K&S Racing, said the first staff there knew of the incident was when they noticed traffic building up.

She said: "We didn't even hear the crash. The bus is still there [at 11.40am] but they're just started loading it onto a lorry now."

Congestion in the area is a major problem with weekend shoppers heading to the Sittingbourne Retail Park and Morrisons store which are close by.

Southeastern Trains say that services have resumed and are now running normally through the town.
