It sounds barking mad – but a teenager has been making and selling dog biscuits so that she can go on a trip of a lifetime.

Hannah-Lucy Haith is one of 15 Fulston Manor School students who each need to raise £4,000 to take part in a World Challenge trip to China next July.

To date she has collected £400, £40 of which came from teaching staff who snapped up the dog treats she created in the kitchen of her family home in Merlin Close, Sittingbourne.

The rest of the money was from a sponsored sleep-over held in the school grounds back in April, packing bags for shoppers at Iceland in Sittingbourne High Street and baking and selling cakes to staff and students.

During the month long trip the youngsters will trek up some of China’s mountains and take part in community-based projects such as working in orphanages or schools, renovating playgrounds or painting classrooms.

The 15-year-old said: "I’m doing it because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"I’ve got various other fundraising events I’m looking into such as holding an auction of artwork at Christmas.

"I’ve got lots of friends who are arty so I plan on asking them to donate some work and I plan to approach local schools as well.

"I’m also looking at doing a Body Shop raffle.

"I’m hopeful I’m going to raise all the money in time.

"I’ve got to have it all by May. I don’t know what’s going to happen if I don’t raise it all. I’ve not really thought about it."

Hannah-Lucy has set up an account with the website www.easyfundraising.org.uk where people can register for a percentage of the money they spend online with certain stores to go to her cause.
