Talk about adding another string to your bow.

Alice Hudson recently smashed her competition when she took part in the Kent County Archery Championships and achieved a score over 800.

As a result the Year 9 Sittingbourne Community College student won the nationally recognised County Archery Champion award in the 13 to 16-year-olds category, but it wasn’t without its obstacles.

Adam Kenyon, archery co-ordinator at the college, said: “Alice turned 13 the day before the competition, which meant she was put up a level just one day before the event.”

But Alice’s skill and flair shone through and took her to victory, thanks to the dedication that both Alice and her coach have put in.

Mr Kenyon said: “Alice only took up the sport about 18 months ago after being introduced to it at the college.

"However, taking into account the school holidays and other timetabled events, she has only been shooting for about six months in total.

"Her progression and the skill she has built up in that short space of time is outstanding."

And it is not only her tutor who believes in her ability, as Alice has become the first recipient of head teacher Alan Barham’s bursary.

Mr Barham said: "It was clear from the beginning that Alice had not only raw talent, but determination and passion for the sport, with an eagerness to learn more.

“The equipment for such an activity can be quite expensive, thus the bursary allowed Alice to work with the best equipment possible to develop her skills.

"We are extremely proud of what she has achieved.”

Alice is due to take part in the Winter Archery Festival where staff and students from local schools will compete.
