150 people evacuated after leisure centre chemical scare

Around 150 people were caught up in the evacuation of a Kent leisure centre after a chemical scare.

Firefighters were called to Swallows Leisure Centre in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne shortly before 9am Sunday.

Two crews along with the Kent Fire and Rescue Service Incident Support Unit were sent to the scene.

People inside were initially taken to a nearby social club. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution but is not thought to be seriously hurt.

Firefighters wore chemical protection suits to make the scene safe by decontaminating the area.

It is believed sodium hypochlorite and polyaluminium chloride were accidentally mixed together, causing a chemical reaction.
