Boxer Shanahan gets England call

Boxer Danny Shanahan received a surprise international call-up last week.

The 23-year-old super heavyweight, who is a member of the Sheppey-based Eastern ABC, was called up to fight for an England Select team against Scotland Select in central London last Thursday.

Shanahan, from Sittingbourne, with only two previous fights to his name, found it tough going before being stopped by his Scottish opponent in the second round.

Dean Rollins, one of four coaches at the Eastern club, said: “It was a great experience for him so early in his career and it was also a nice piece of recognition for our club.

“We have only been going for three years but things are going really well and there’s a good buzz about the place.”

The previous weekend, Shanahan and fellow Eastern member Danny Debruin (65kg) had both scored points victories when they appeared on a show at the Winter Gardens in Margate.
