Eight Island primary schools tested their fitness levels at a cross country running event.

About 230 runners from St George’s, Minster, Richmond, Eastchurch, Elliott Park, Halfway Houses, St Edward’s and Queenborough primary schools joined in the fun at Sheppey Sports Ground in Halfway last Wednesday.

The event was a warm-up to the Swale-wide cross country event which will take place in Sittingbourne later this month.

St George’s Primary School won the boys’ Year 5 and 6 and Minster Primary School won the girls’ Year 5 and 6 event.

Halfway Houses won the boys’ Year 3 and 4 event and Minster Primary school won the girls’ Year 3 and 4 event.

The youngsters ran 1,000 metres, and the older children ran 1,800 metres.

James Thatcher, sports development manager for Swale, said: “We had some really close races.”
