Water burst cuts off Minster homes on Sheppey

A hundred houses including a care home were left without water when three mains burst overnight and flooded roads.

Workmen were called to Minster, Sheppey, in the early hours to repair the damage.

Southern Water spokesman Simon Fluendy said: "Our teams have already repaired one burst in Southdown Road but customers may notice some discolouration when they first use their taps.

"We are now starting work in Glenwood Drive and a further crew will start at Minster Road once we have traffic management in place.

"Our technicians are trying to re-route water to minimise how many customers are affected but some customers may experience low pressure or no water.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes."

He added: "As a precaution, we are distributing water to our priority customers including a care home.

"There is also water on the road so drivers should take extra care."

He said engineers were still trying to establish the cause.

One worried resident who did not want to be named said: "This is not the first time this has happened. Water gushes off the road into my drive and floods my garage."

Some believe the water mains, which are set in London Clay, ruptured when the ground moved.

Another resident said: "I was told it was caused by the misuse of a fire hydrant."

The water was due to be turned off at 8.30am to allow "safe working" and was expected to be back within three hours.
