Shellness Road, Leysdown, labelled as ‘disgusting’ after ‘poor’ road resurfacing

The resurfacing of a busy road has been called “disgusting” by those living nearby after recently laid asphalt was left uneven and full of holes.

Shellness Road, in Leysdown, was seen in the shocking condition just days after the road was closed earlier this week.

A 66-year-old, from nearby Wing Road, said: “There was a lot of disruption when they were resurfacing the road on Monday 22, and Tuesday, May 23.

“I saw the hold-ups when I walked my dogs, there were about seven or eight cars waiting to go through toward Muswell Manor. Diversion signs were in place to take motorists up Wing Road, but there was no way through to Muswell or Shellness.

“And, despite all of that disruption, I am now wondering how long it will be before they shut the road again to resurface it properly.

“We are paying for this, it is disgusting. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it.”

The man, who has lived in Leysdown for 11 years, believes another layer is set to go onto the recently laid asphalt in the weeks to come.

However, he fears that due to the poor bottom layer, it will just be a matter of time before the road is closed again and the resurfacing will need redoing.

Swale Council confirmed that Kent County Council are responsible for the works. A KCC spokesman said: “We are aware of the fault on the road and this is being fixed today. It is to our understanding that the works weren’t left in this way by our crews.”

A worker from the nearby Coastal Park Garden Cafe said shortly after 3pm on Thursday, May 25, the road did appear to be smooth once more.

But this hadn’t stopped the people of the town taking to social media to share their upset at the “poor attempt”.

One person commented: “That's what you get when they do it in a day! How can a proper job be done in that time?”

Another person added: “It's a disgusting attempt.”
