Popular Playa pub and restaurant on Sheppey is up for rent

Ever fancied running a pub and restaurant with sea views on the Isle of Sheppey?

Well, now's your chance as the Playa, one of the Island's most popular venues, is up for rent.

The seafront pub on The Leas at Minster was closed down last month after lease-holders Neil Moran and his sister Laura I’Anson refused to sign up for another term. Their family had run it for 25 years.

Now the pub's owners have put it up for rent and are asking for at least £25,000 for the leasehold and another £55,000 a year to run the business.

Its details have been put on the market by pub specialists Sprosen Grosvenor which has offices in London and Somerset.

The free house and restaurant with "stunning coastal views" is said to have turned over £700,000 a year pre-Covid. It comes with a self-contained private four-bedroom flat upstairs with its own kitchen.

There is also seating for 250 outdoors in the beer garden and parking for 50 vehicles.

The sales brochure says: "The Playa occupies a superb trading location overlooking the coastline and pebble beach. This is a popular beauty spot for both locals and those coming further afield.

"Here you are surrounded by a superb network of motorways, speeding easily into other south-east locations. The city of London is around 50 miles away by car."

It says the main bar has a solid wooden floor with two large bay windows overlooking the coast, beamed ceiling and a large brick fireplace with gas-effect log fire. The restaurant seats 24. The commercial kitchen comes with stainless-steel dishwasher, oven, deep-fat fryers and walk-in cold room.

Upstairs features a large lounge with brick fireplace and "fantastic coastline view", three bedrooms, one doubling as an office, and bathroom. The deal includes an outside bar and large store.

Mr Moran and his sister, who admitted they had been hit hard by the Covid lockdowns, said they wanted to concentrate on their other catering businesses at Sittingbourne and Sheerness golf clubs. Mr Moran said: “We wanted to develop the pub. We would like to have seen a dining area upstairs with views out to the sea or airbnb B rooms.

“We would also have liked to have extended the pub so we could have a function hall to host weddings and events. We were doing more of that in the garden but it costs £5,000 each time to hire a marquee."

He added: “The whole work would have cost about £500,000 which the landlords didn’t want to invest in. We understand their decision but realised we had gone as far as we could with the venue.”
