Swaleside Prison staff praised for courage after 'frightening' fight inside Sheppey jail

Two inmates at Swaleside Prison - one armed with a knife - took part in a punch up inside the Isle of Sheppey jail.

A number of prisoners on Alpha Wing took part in the fracas in March, Maidstone Crown Court heard.

Now a judge has commended several prison staff for their courage in dealing with the "frightening incident".

Prosecutor Michael Hillman told how prisoner Mohammed Adan "emerged from his cell with as weapon" and attacked fellow inmate Roger Aiken.

He said: "Aiken was armed with a blade and so responded by stabbing Adan back.

"From this point onwards, all order collapsed and several other prisoners involved themselves in the violence."

He added that two weapons were seized by prison staff and the incident was caught on camera and shown to the JudgeTony Baumgartner.

Brixton-man Aiken, 41, who is serving an indeterminate sentence for attempted murder when he shot his victim in the head.

He admitted violent disorder and received a 22 month jail term which will run concurrently.

Aiken claimed that while in jail other inmates had tried to make him ditch his Christian beliefs and become a Muslim.

Aiken complained to the authorities and is now serving his sentence at HMS High Down in Surrey.

Leonard Yearde, 28, who is serving a 16 year sentence for possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life in a drive-by shooting in 2012, also admitted violent disorder and possessing a knife inside jail.

He received a 13 month concurrent sentence.

Mr Hilman said Aiken received a slash wound to his head and chest and was taken to hospital.

Three more prisoners, including Adan, who have admitted similar charges, will be sentenced later this week for their part in the bust-up in which a chair was also thrown.
