Poorly toddler Oliver Smith is looking forward to going swimming for the first time since he was a baby.

The three-year-old, who has the childhood cancer neuroblastoma, will finally be able to go now that he has had his hickman line removed.

Oliver and his mum Natalie had an appointment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Thursday.

As well as having his hickman line out, doctors also took out his porta-cath – meaning Oliver will now be able to bathe and swim like other children.

Natalie, of Coral Road, Minster, said: “He was a bit sore over the weekend and although he had a little dressing over where the lines were, that came off on Monday.

“Now he will be able to have a proper bath like everyone else – but he’s most excited about going swimming.

“He had been a couple of times before he got ill – but he was about 10 months old.”

Meanwhile, Islanders are still continuing their crusade to help raise the £150,000 Oliver’s family is trying to raise for treatment he could need in Germany if his condition gets worse.

On Saturday, Jenna Yates, who works at the Easy Shopper in Sheerness, was sponsored to have her long hair cut off – raising more than £600 for the Oliver Smith Appeal.

The 24-year-old had it done at the Castle pub in Sheerness and they also put on a disco.

Generous Islanders have now raised £52,723 towards the total.
