Former Jam drummer Rick Buckler is to make a guest appearance at a Sheerness East charity day next month

Drumming legend Rick Buckler is guest star at an Island fundraiser being held next month.

The former member of British pop heroes The Jam will be signing copies of his forthcoming autobiography, That’s Entertainment, at Sheerness East Working Men’s Club.

The charity day, being held on Saturday, May 23, is to raise money to help fight bile duct cancer in memory of Jimmy Gray.

Dad-of-two Jimmy, a former East coach and passionate Jam fan, died of the disease, known as cholangiocarcinoma, aged 52 in February last year.

Rick’s presence is among the highlights on a day of fun-filled activities.

It kicks off at 10am with a football tournament featuring veteran and junior teams, and as well as The Jam man’s appearance in the afternoon, DJ Paul “Wils” Wilson from Sid James Scooter Club will be playing a selection of 60s pop and northern soul classics.

There’s also a live tribute to The Jam featuring Blighty guitarist, Mark Whitton, and throughout the day an array of entertainment is on hand for children including face painting, bubble football and a penalty shootout competition.

Boogie Nights Productions, which includes Island DJs Gary Croucher and Thomas Felton, bring proceedings to a close from 7pm with a disco featuring a host of stellar dancefloor fillers.

All proceeds will be donated to AMMF, the cholangiocarcinoma charity.

John Munday from Halfway, who is helping organise the fundraiser, said: “Having lost such a special friend, we decided that we needed to arrange something in memory of one of the Island’s great characters.

“Last year’s event raised £4,000, which speaks volumes for the community spirit on the Island.

“I feel sure that with everyone’s support, this year we’ll exceed all expectations.”
