One of Sheppey’s secrets has been unveiled as part of an art project.
The Blue Town Heritage Centre is now in possession of a sign revealing the existence of a giant chain which, during the Second World War, hung between Sheerness and Grain with a net beneath it to protect from a German submarine invasion.
It was given to the centre by artist Nicole Mollett who is running a project called Share a Secret as part of the Kent Cultural Baton – an art project to celebrate the Olympics.
Share a Secret encourages people to donate information about a place in Kent. The secrets can be facts, fables or personal stories to help uncover hidden wonders.
Nicole and Kent County Council will then choose a secret for each area which will be put on signs and given out to communities to display.
Nicole said: “The Island secret is interesting because it’s about Sheppey connecting to the world. The idea of the chain is an amazing visual image.”
