Kent County Council confirmed that drivers travelling on the Island would have to use an alternative route via A2500 Lower Road, the A249, Queenborough Road, B2008 Minster Road, Chequers Road and Eastchurch Road.

The emergency gas works, which were only scheduled to be carried out yesterday but were still reportedly causing issues today, are being done by gas company SGN.

A spokesman for SGN said: “Our engineers have completed emergency repairs to our gas network, and the road has been re-opened under temporary traffic lights.

“The lights will remain in place until the reinstated road surface has set.”

Those living and working on the Island have taken to Facebook to share the traffic nightmare caused by the roadworks.

One person commented: “Put an extra hour on your journey as the traffic is chaotic.”

Another said: “Don’t even think about travelling.”

Someone else replied: “It’s awful. If you are Eastchurch way you will have to turn right to go past the water tower.

“There are tailbacks due to lorries trying to get through the opposite way.”
