Car near tracks disrupts trains

Rail services to and from Sheerness have been restored after a car lost control and veered onto a railway track.

Police and ambulance services were called to the incident on the A249 (Brielle Way), Sheerness, which happened at around 10.50 am today.

The red Peugeot 406 had been travelling away from Sheerness on Brielle Way when the driver lost control of the vehicle and went through a chain link fence.

The car ended up near the track, which runs parallel to the road.

The male driver was treated for minor head injuries by ambulance crews at the scene and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital as a precaution.

Witness Chris Newman said: “It looks like a spectacular accident. A car seems to have gone through the fence and onto the track. It is quite an astonishing scene.”

Trains were suspended between Queenborough and Sheerness but started running at around 2.20pm.

There was minor disruption to traffic on Brielle Way as officers had to close one lane to allow emergency vehicles to work at the scene.
