Creative school pupils could have their artwork painted on to a town-centre building.

A group of 18 BTEC art and design pupils from across both sites of the Isle of Sheppey Academy are in the process of sketching murals for The Pavilion in Sheerness.

The building has been given a £15,000 revamp and is now running courses to help youngsters break into the world of radio under the title of Sheppey Community Media Centre.

Julie Nicholls, community coordinator at the centre, has given the Year 10 pupils a brief that states all designs must be about the origins of music.

Each student will complete a number of murals as part of their coursework, and Julie will choose the best piece of each of their work.

Subject to planning permission from Swale council, the murals will then be painted on to the outside of the building.

Maylow Construction will soon be preparing the walls with donated paint, and it is hoped the designs will start to appear in early spring.

Sam Williams, head of the academy’s Abbey school and art teacher, said: “They are really enjoying it.

“It will be interesting to see how it all works out.”
