Armed police in Rose Street, Sheerness

Armed police were called to a residential street on the Isle of Sheppey this afternoon after a man was spotted with a weapon.

Kent Police got a report of a person "in possession of a weapon" just before 1.30pm and armed officers could be seen patrolling the high street for much of the afternoon.

No arrests have been made but a police spokesman said enquiries are ongoing.

Three officers carrying automatic weapons were then seen "wandering" around looking for someone near the junction of Rose Street and Granville Road.

Locals reported seeing several police cars arrive in the area, which is close to the town centre, before 4pm.

One eyewitness said: "They hung around for about before heading off at about 4.15pm."
