Students at a primary school in Sevenoaks made a splash for a Lent appeal.

St Thomas' Catholic Primary School held a swim-a-thon and scoot-a-thon to as part of a fundraising campaign run by CAFOD.

CAFOD is the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Across the world it supports poor communities with the help of local churches.

In an added boost the fundraising efforts will be doubled by the Government's Department for International Development up until May.

The money raised by the school, in South Park, will help CAFOD turn taps on across the world by repairing or providing water pumps and providing training in order to maintain them.

It will also help fund hygiene programmes, education in sanitation and the building of latrines.

Matched funds from the Government will enable access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene programmes to over 300,000 people in Uganda, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Pupils at St Thomas’ spent a morning getting soggy both in the pool and in the playground – thanks to the British weather.

The money raised is still being counted and the school hopes to reach a £1,000 target.

Claudia Aquilina, head teacher, said: “We’re delighted with the effort all the pupils made towards this fundraising event. It has been much more than fundraising – it has raised awareness among our pupils and their families of CAFOD’s work."
