Pile-ups on A21 after crane leaks fluid

MORE than 20 vehicles were involved in a series of minor collisions on the A21. Six vehicles had to be recovered from the road.

Two people suffered minor injuries and one of them was taken to Kent and Sussex Hospital at Tunbridge Wells.

Police received a number of calls from 7.40am on Tuesday about a number of collisions southbound from the Chipstead slip road to Morleys roundabout near Sevenoaks.

The road was closed in the first instance from Chipstead to Morleys and then the closure was extended so that the road was closed from the M25 to the Tonbridge Quarry Hill off slip - a distance of about nine miles.

Police spokeswoman Anne McCarthy said: "The cause of the collisions is being investigated but it appears that shortly before they began a crane leaking hydraulic fluid had been travelling along the road.

"The crane driver stopped his vehicle in a lay-by near Tonbridge when he realised the fluid was leaking onto the carriageway."
